Psychiatric evidence for prison law solicitors across the UK

I am instructed in prison law matters where the court, tribunal, prison authority, or legal team needs clear psychiatric evidence on diagnosis, risk, treatment needs, capacity, vulnerability, or the impact of detention on mental health. My reports are used in cases involving severe mental illness in custody, ACCT-related concerns, segregation, hospital transfer issues, parole evidence, and challenges connected to prison conditions or access to care.

My reports address the practical questions in your case: whether your client’s presentation is consistent with psychosis, major depression, PTSD, personality disorder, neurodevelopmental disorder, or cognitive impairment; whether prison management is worsening the condition; whether treatment is adequate; and whether transfer, diversion, or additional safeguards should be considered.

I have been an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist in Birmingham since 2003, I am FRCPsych, and I am regularly appointed as an SJE. I provide urgent prison law reports where deadlines are short, including assessments in prisons and secure settings where appropriate.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessments

What my prison law reports cover

I assess the psychiatric issues that most often arise in custody, prison healthcare disputes, parole-related proceedings, and prison law challenges involving risk, treatment, and vulnerability.

Psychiatric assessment of prisoners with psychosis, severe depression, PTSD, personality disorder, or complex trauma
Mental health evidence in prison law claims involving segregation, isolation, or restricted regimes
Risk assessment for suicide, self-harm, violence, and deterioration in custody
Reports addressing transfer to hospital and mental health treatment needs in custody
Capacity and vulnerability assessments for prisoners with serious mental illness or cognitive impairment
Parole-related psychiatric evidence on diagnosis, risk formulation, insight, and treatment progress
Assessments of the mental health impact of prison conditions, trauma, or prolonged detention
Neurodevelopmental and learning disability presentations affecting prison management and support needs
Dual-accredited reports for claimant and defendant instructions
Urgent prison psychiatric assessments where court or custodial deadlines are tight
Reports considering treatment adequacy, compliance, prognosis, and recommended safeguards
Assessment of functional impact on daily living, decision-making, behaviour, and engagement in custody
Custody · Vulnerability · Risk

Serious mental illness and risk in custody

A large part of my prison law work concerns prisoners whose mental state has become unstable in custody or whose psychiatric disorder has not been properly recognised. I assess whether the presentation is consistent with psychotic illness, severe mood disorder, PTSD, complex trauma, personality disorder, or another condition requiring structured treatment and close monitoring.

My reports set out diagnosis, severity, current symptoms, level of risk, and the effect of the prison environment on your client’s mental state. Where relevant, I address self-harm risk, suicide risk, behavioural disturbance, compliance with treatment, and whether the case raises concerns about segregation, inadequate healthcare input, or the need for a different therapeutic setting.

Issues I Commonly Assess
  • Psychosis and schizophrenia spectrum disorders
  • Major depressive disorder and suicidal ideation
  • PTSD and complex trauma in custody
  • Personality disorder and emotional dysregulation
  • Self-harm, suicide risk, and vulnerability
  • Anxiety disorders and panic symptoms
  • Substance misuse with comorbid psychiatric illness
  • Behaviour linked to untreated mental disorder
Transfer · Parole · Treatment

Hospital transfer, parole, capacity, and complex prison mental health cases

I am also instructed where prison law issues overlap with forensic psychiatry, parole evidence, or questions about capacity and effective participation. In these cases, I assess whether the prisoner’s psychiatric condition is being adequately treated in custody, whether further detention conditions are aggravating the illness, and whether hospital transfer or enhanced mental health input should be considered.

In parole-related and complex prison mental health cases, I provide a clear opinion on diagnosis, risk formulation, insight, treatment engagement, prognosis, and the likely effect of ongoing detention. Where cognitive impairment, neurodevelopmental disorder, or learning disability is relevant, I address how that affects communication, decision-making, behaviour, and the ability to engage with prison processes.

Complex Cases I Handle
  • Hospital transfer and secure treatment needs
  • Parole reports involving psychiatric risk evidence
  • Segregation and restricted regime mental health impact
  • Learning disability in custody
  • Autism spectrum disorder and prison vulnerability
  • Cognitive impairment affecting participation
  • Second opinion reports and joint expert statements
  • Prison and secure hospital assessments
Specialist Psychiatric Assessments

Expert report specialties relevant to prison law

Prison law instructions often overlap with my work in Forensic Psychiatry, particularly where risk, offending-related history, hospital transfer, or secure setting management is central to the case. I am also instructed in Learning Disabilities Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry where vulnerability, cognitive impairment, psychosis, depression, or trauma affect a prisoner’s presentation and management in custody.
