Medico-Legal Psychiatric Reports

Psychiatric Expert Witness Services

I provide psychiatric expert witness services across the principal areas of law in which mental health evidence affects liability, causation, capacity, risk, prognosis and disposal. Solicitors instruct me where the psychiatric issues must be analysed clearly for the legal questions in dispute, with fixed fees, nationwide assessments, and reports delivered in 1–2 weeks as standard or 2–5 working days where urgent.

Overview

Psychiatric expertise aligned to the legal issues in dispute

Different cases require different psychiatric analysis. In personal injury and clinical negligence matters, my reports address diagnosis, causation, apportionment, treatment need and prognosis. In criminal, family, immigration, prison and tribunal work, the central questions may instead concern Section 12(2) mental health assessment, vulnerability, risk, credibility-relevant psychiatric context, capacity, functioning, or fitness issues.

I am regularly instructed by claimant and defendant solicitors and as a single joint expert. I have been an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist in Birmingham since 2003, I am APIL Tier 1 recommended, dual-accredited for claimant and defendant work, and my reports have been commended by judges for clarity. Solicitors instruct me because I focus the report on the legal purpose of the evidence, not on generic psychiatric description.

Working Approach

A report structure that adapts to the law, not the other way around

The same diagnosis can have very different medico-legal significance depending on the legal context. A trauma disorder in personal injury litigation raises different issues from psychiatric vulnerability in immigration work, testamentary capacity in probate, or disposal and risk in criminal proceedings. I therefore structure every assessment around the questions your case actually has to answer.

01

Review of Instruction

I review the pleadings, chronology, records and specific questions so the assessment is directed to the live legal issues from the outset.

02

Psychiatric Assessment

I carry out a structured clinical assessment focused on diagnosis, psychiatric history, treatment, functioning, vulnerability, risk and any capacity issues relevant to your case.

03

Forensic Analysis

I apply the clinical evidence to the correct legal framework, whether that concerns causation, prognosis, disposal, capacity, risk, credibility-relevant context or future support needs.

04

Report Delivery

My reports are drafted clearly for conference, negotiation, tribunal and court use, with prompt turnaround and a reasoned opinion that stands up to scrutiny.

Professional, responsive support across multiple legal disciplines

I accept instructions from solicitors across personal injury, clinical negligence, criminal law, family proceedings, employment disputes, immigration and asylum, prison law, probate, public law, housing, mental health tribunal and fitness to practice matters.

My fees are fixed, with no hidden charges, and flexible or deferred payment terms are available where appropriate. I also accept LAA, CFA or insurance, private, and council, court or CPS-funded work.

Where a case requires input beyond my own instruction, I also maintain links with experts across psychiatry, psychology, orthopaedics, neurology and other disciplines. That allows solicitors to define the right expert pathway at an early stage.
